Steve Jobs Withheld I-Products from his Kids?!

I came across an article today that blew my mind. Steve Jobs, famously known for the innovation of apple products, did not let his kids use i-phones or i-pads. He saw the potential dangers behind misusing technology and didn't want to see that happen to his kids. Instead, he placed a huge emphasis on family togetherness and interaction. He made a point to have a family dinner every night, where he and his family would discuss books, history, and other topics.

I also found it interesting that this article cites a study from the University of California that found an immediate increase in social skills among children within days of abstaining from media.

I think that is really neat. Steve Jobs revolutionized technology but did not let it take over his life, or the lives of his family members. He understood the importance of social interaction and did not let technology be a substitute. I think everyone can learn from his example.

Read the article!! It's incredibly short and wonderfully fascinating.

  1. Daaaaaang! Steve Jobs is a straight up G!

That's awesome! I see too many young children being absorbed by the powers of ipads, tablets, and their parents' phones. It's ridiculous how much time they spend on them! I have a neice who just barely turned two, and her parents let her play games on their phone all the time. She is always asking for it so she can play on it again and again. Her two older siblings (5 and 7) are also always playing games on their parents' tablet. The parents almost bought them tablets for Christmas last year, but decided against it. Thank goodness! I strongly feel that children should not have access to such technology until they are at least old enough to read a novel or something. Jeewilikers!

  2. Seriously, this is amazing. Go Steve Jobs! I think it's crazy when really really young kids are playing games on their parents' iPad or iPhone. Kids (and adults) need to experience life in real life - not through a screen. Go him.

  3. I think it's amazing that Steve Jobs was able to recognize this and prevent his own kids from falling into the trap of using too much technology. Especially since younger and younger kids are able to work the products. I have a 3 year old nephew who understands more about his family's i-pad than I do, and it blows my mind.

  4. That is amazing that he could keep the world's separate. It'd be hard to be pushing out products for Apple but then go home to a life without it. He definitely understood the principle of leaving work at work, and focusing on home life while there with his family.

  5. This is great! It probably wasn't easy to keep these things from his children, but he obviously could see the benefits from actual human interaction and finding other productive interests. I also love how he had family dinner with his kids, that's something that is disappearing in our culture today but I think it's so important!
